CHALLENGE

From 19-25 October, I will compete in the Kalahari Augrabies Extreme Marathon (KAEM – www.extrememarathons.com). It is a self-sustaining foot race, over 7 days in the kalahari desert – covering 242 km. During this time, I will run between 26 km and 75 km a day, over sand and rocky tracks, with temperatures reaching 50°C, pushing my body to its absolute limits. I will be sleeping under the stars on a 1,2m mattress (I’m 1,93m tall..) and eating only what I can carry with me in my backpack.

My challenge is to complete this race.

In 2010 when I first did the KAEM, I realized that the biggest privilege in life is to have choices – something many of us take for granted every day. I will experience 7 days where my choices are limited – I will only be supplied with water, have no coffee, no cold Coke, no fruit or braaivleis – just Cup-A-Soup, crushed biscuits, 2 Minute Noodles..you get the picture.

Pure Hope Kids (http://gemeenskap.moreleta.org/purehopekids) is a preschool educational institution for underprivileged children. It provides the kids with two meals a day and a preschool level schooling. Without this facility, many of the kids will grow up uneducated and undernourished, with very limited choices going forward in life.

My limited choice, however, is due to my own choosing and only for 7 days!

The kids at Pure Hope don’t have any choice in their circumstances – they are forced to face them daily, and depend on donations for the existence of their school. My wish is to raise money for this school, enabling the school to continue giving the gift of choice.

So now that you have an understanding of my challenge, here is my challenge to you:

Pledge to sponsor me per kilometer! Whether it is 10c/km or R10/km, every cent goes directly to Pure Hope Kids, and every cent counts. Send your pledge to info@shorttermbrokers.co.za).
